Brisco Bros. 2011

So with Hollywood in the books for a solid four months now, it’s time to look toward Brisco Bros. 2011 – Taggin’ the Twins! Twin cities that is, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota. WTF is there to do to rip it up in Minnesota you ask? Hockey. What? Yes, repeat after me… H… O… C… yeah, you get it now.

Once again our trip will begin with the NHL Draft and take in the rest of the shit show Minny has to offer us. I’m sure we can get into some shit there. Maybe bring our sticks and break out a random road hockey game in front of the arena. Briscos vs. Whoever Has The Balls To Bring It!! BOOOOM!!

Also new this year, NO BRO LEFT BEHIND!! Well at least not on the way there. We’re forcing Big Buff to come. Even if I have to pay for that bastard myself (no, this is not an offer to do that). BB2010 wasn’t the same without him.

So look out Minnesota, you ain’t gonna walk straight or shit right for a week when we’re done!

You Want Updates, You Got Updates!

Ok so I haven’t updated in a couple days but in fairness, in a town like this there are better things to do than write a blog.

The draft was awesome, really glad I got the opportunity to be there for what was essentially the birth of the Taylor Hall era in Edmonton. GO OIL!

Friday night we were brought out on the town and finished the night at Voyeur Nightclub. Umm, wow. No, WOW! Props to Brandon’s girl Heather for pulling some strings to get us in. This place was like no other! After the club we grabbed some food at a taco joint while we were enlightened as to the ins and outs of the movie business.

Saturday we got our asses out of Chinatown and moved to a hotel just off the beach in Marina del Rey. Very nice! Took a short but tragedy filled (Ray lost his cellphone, for me it was funny, for him, not so much) trip down to the beach to check out the ocean!

The night had us out on the town again, Brandon and Heather took us to a killer sushi bar! Sushi is sooo good when done right. After that we hit the bars again, this time in Venice, hopped a few places, talked hockey with guys from Minnesota and Utah, had a killer drink made by a “Mixologist”. These guys take their shit seriously, order a Jack and Coke and they’ll throw you into the street. Can’t remember the drink name for the life of me but I know it had whiskey and blueberry in it. Everywhere we went we were introduced to tons of new people and everyone is awesome. I’ve yet to experience any snobbish attitudes and I hope it stays that way, why ruin a good thing right?

Finished the night at Brandon’s place drinking and having a blast with him and his roomates. Drunk-dialed my wife on the way back to the hotel at 5:30 AM, luckily it was 8:30 there and she was up brushing her teeth. Coulda been in some serious shit there.

Today was a bit of a recovery day, Ray slept and I drove out to Hollywood to cruise around a bit. I’m sure it has it’s faults but the more I see, the more I love this town. No wonder nobody wants to leave! Tonight will be a calm night, Brandon and Heather are hosting us with a little barbeque, really looking forward to it!

Later,
Rob

Day 2 – Ray Arrives and LA Live!

Ok so most of day two sucked, did some shopping while waiting around for Ray to arrive. So he finally gets here, we grab our rental car and hit the road. By this time it’s about 8:30 pm and we figure we better get to the hotel and check in (#2 of 4). Wow, she’s smack in the middle of some kind of Chinatown, everything, and I mean everything, is in some asian language (to be fair, it may not be Chinese) right down to the instructions fur using the in-room phone.

Inside the barriers

So anyway we get settled in and decide we want to find some food. Neither one of us feels like Oriental so we roll. It’s 10:30 pm and we can’t find anything so I say fuck it, lets try around LA Live. So we get there and there’s barriers up but it looks like they are starting to clean up so we hop a barrier on the Staples Center side of the street and cross over in to the LA Live plaza and we’re somehow in a zoned off area so we walk up to a spot where two fences meet and as I reach out to move it a bit to go through, the security guy opens it for us!

Crash the Premiere!

We are right outside the doors to the Nokia Theater and there’s lots of people dressed uo, Ray points to the main entrance to the area where there are two more security guys that are letting people out but not in haha! Nice, we crashed this and had no idea! Yes it’s a gay ass movie but it’s still cool that we crashed it!

Bad Ass 32oz Beer

The novelty of this wore off pretty quick, so we exited through the main entrance and proceeded on our quest for food, settling on a sports bar called Yard House. Sign outside said “Over 100 Beers On Tap”, we were like “Hell Yeah” and went in! Killer food, and I am not saying that liberally, even the ranch dip for the wings was a cut above. Very decent prices for huge portions too, where do you ever find 16 jumbo wings for $10? Ray also polished off a 32oz bad ass glass of beer. We loved it so much we’re going back tonight after the draft.

Well, this is a little long winded so I’ll cut it off here. Gotta wake Ray up and hit the road! Time for some shopping in LA before heading downtown around 2!

Palm Trees and Media Types!

Hey all, I started a blog on the airplane but something happened and it shit the bed so here I begin another.

The weather is beautiful, clear blue skies and a 19 degrees so not to hot! Palm trees! I forgot there’d be palm trees!
My flight was interesting, it was completely packed with pretty much the entire Edmonton media contingent and some of the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL) management! So we step off the plane and as we enter the terminal, there’s Sheldon Souray waiting to board a flight. In fairness, I didn’t spot him, 630 CHED’s Dan Tencer was just ahead of me and went over to say hi.

I’ve checked into hotel #1 of the 4 I will be staying at during our stay. Why 4 you ask? Well since somebody is arriving a day later I figured I’d stay the first night near the airport to make meeting up easier. Then we have the next two nights in Monterey to be closer to downtown for the Draft before heading out to Malibu for the rest of our stay and wrapped up by one last night by the airport since Mr. Sorry Ass is also leaving a day earlier than I am.

Took a picture of the airport out the plane window as we were descending into LAX, blue ocean to the right, begging me to come for a swim. Love the big city smog, good thing you can’t see it like that from the ground! Anyway, off for now, time to go exploring and see what I can see!

Quick note to end this off, I fly to LA and there’s an earthquake in Quebec, wtf? Haha.

So much to do….

So it’s 3:53 A.M. here on the west coast and I’m sitting here at work. My shift finishes at 7 A.M. The thought of punching the clock at day’s end is usually a time we all look forward to….I mean hell it’s the end of the day! Time to head home and fire up the BBQ and indulge in a few beverages right?  WRONG!! Well at least thats the answer you’ll get outta me right about now. I’m not necessarily looking forward to going home. No, I don’t mean Sudbury silly, I’m talking about my home here in Whistler.

As you all may or may not know, Rob and I are heading to L.A. for a week to attend the NHL Entry Draft. Rob leaves tomorrow afternoon but I don’t get there until Thursday evening around 7 P.M. Nonetheless, I aint looking forward to going home because I have to clean the house. Which ummmmm…..sucks!!!  After our trip to L.A., I am flying straight home to Sudbury. That means I have to be completely moved out by tomorrow night at 10:30 P.M. because I have to work graveyard shift at 11 P.M. tomorrow night. Then after my shift ends at 7 A.M. on Thursday morning, I have to catch the Greyhound bus down to the city (Vancouver) at 8:15 A.M.

These next 24 hours are going to be very busy!! And probably a little insane as well…but you know what? It’ll all be worth it once I touchdown in L.A. and wiggle my toes in the sandy beach……. staring out at the ocean whilst marrying my lips to an ice cold bottle of Canadian. Wait….do they even sell Canadian in the States…….??

Go time…

Ok so it’s 12:33 am, my flight leaves in a little less than 10 hours. I’m packed, well mostly, and kinda tired. I keep thinking I have so much to do but I really can’t think of what. I’m not really getting that sense of excitement, and I know I will forget something, I’m just hoping it’s something I don’t really need like my underwear.

One thing I am getting pumped for is the Draft itself, this is our time in oil country and be damned if I was going to miss history being made. It will all sink in about the time we take our seats at the Staples Center on Friday afternoon, evening for our friends out east. Until then I don’t know what to expect. I’ll end it with that. I’ll give an update once I get settled into the hotel tomorrow afternoon.

I’m hungry, too bad Arby’s wasn’t still open. Oh well, to the 7-11 it is! Speaking of 7-11, want a good way to beat the heat? Mix this beauty up… Cola Slushie topped off with a touch Lime Crush Slushie and dump in some Capt. Morgan white to your taste!

Cali Baby Here We Come!

2010 NHL Draft
Staples Center
Los Angeles, CA

So our NHL Draft tickets are in hand! Nothing holding us back now ‘cept scoring a good seat, and I’m willing to fight for one! The show begins at 4pm local time, not sure what time we’ll need to get down there, seats are “first come, first serve” You’ll notice 3 tickets, while only two of us are going, anyone wanna to join us? I gaurantee a good time!

Have 3 tickets to the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” for Thursday night, looks like we aren’t gonna make it to that though unless I go myself. Ray’s flight doesn’t land until after 6pm and you gotta be at the studio by 2. Jackass! Too bad, first guest is Tom Cruise. I woulda loved the opportunity to heckle that scientology loving nut bag!

On another note, the search continues for a sweet as road trip theme song. Leaning toward one, check it out and let us know what you think…

Blog up, let’s ROLL

Ok, so I finally got this blog up, it’s only 11 days before I fly out, figured I better get it done.  Only two of us are participating in 2010, Colin can’t make it, but we’re taking the necessary steps to ensure there isn’t a repeat of this next year.  I’m thinking a few bitch slaps and weekend bender will do the trick.  Now I just gotta get Ray’s ass set up to post here and we’ll be good to go.  Cali here we come!
